"Wow ! ! ! – I was really stunned by the playing on this album. The pictures it painted in my mind were wonderful – really very impressionistic and so intimate. The first time I have heard some playing that is different from the current trends and not trying to be part of the pop culture. This album needs to be listend to very carefully and not used as fill in music for a party.
I first met Birgitta a few years ago in Berlin at a young musicians seminar and I am so happy that she has not been wasting time and that she has developed into a really serious voice in the music scene.

Individual notes peel off as if from a void, as times whirring and barely perceptible, then solidly anchored, but never overbearing. Accords sparingly woven in support the intimate, fragile melodies that flow from Thomas Rückert’s fingers and take listeners into evocative landscapes of sound. Reza Askari’s wood-warm double bass accompanies, joins into the melody in masterly way, corresponds with it and prances around it. The whole is based on the sensitive rhythmic background provided by Fabian Arends. In the same way as his trio companions, he knows how to create enthusiasm with his refined playing. The brushes rustle on the snare drum in all possible variations, the cymbals sparkle and radiate finesse with their daring rhythms, and the bass drum is also permitted to set an accent here and there. The way that he brings that into the playing characterized by strong communication and interaction is really impressive. Ballad-like chamber music jazz with strong European characteristics – romantic, full of melancholy and sensuality. The recordings range from a trio improvisation to individual compositions of the band members and all the way to pieces by Denny Zeitlin, Bill Evans and Skrjabin.

As a trio, the Swiss BucherSommerFriedli have surveyed their field very precisely. The pianist and keyboarder Stefan Aeby has now enhanced the expedition into a quartet as a new member. "Where is Now?" the quartet BucherSommerFriedli and Aeby asks with their new CD and answers with an intoxicating trip into another world. They arrange filigreed structures, conjure up castles in the air, and meander single-mindedly but without haste through wondrous spheres. The band considers itself a collective and functions like intricate clockwork. With guitar, kalimba and harmonica, Michael Bucher wins over listeners for his vanilla-padded dream world. Patrick Sommer on contrabass and e-bass and Tobias Friedli on drums and percussion instruments interact intuitively and supply the resilient dynamics for improvisation without net and cushioned groundwork. When a band celebrates its 25th anniversary, then the first gray hair and bald spots among the members are usually hard to miss. BuJazzO need not fear such things. It has the recipe of eternal youth; none of the members may be older than 24 – another takes the place after that.
A whole slew of musicians has passed through the band in the meantime. They came as promising talented musicians and left as young pros. Initial BuJazzO skeptics dare not utter a word today. What originally looked like a project for prestige purposes promoted by the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl of that time has long since become a core part of the German jazz scene. The 25 years of BuJazzO have resulted in phenomenal and explosive quality. There is hardly any big-name young musician who did not play in this big band at the start of his or her career. "BuJazzO" is a standard item in the biographies of German jazz musicians today!

The Swiss vibraphone player Sonja Huber and the Belgian vocalist Eva Buchmann met at the Jazz Institute Berlin in 2007. Influenced by an author of children books, they founded their duo "Lottchen". Since then, they never stopped exploring the world of duo playing… Lottchen plays whatever fits their unconventional combination of vibes and vocals: deformed popsongs, jazzstandards, original compositions… Genres happily collide in Lottchen’s repertoire, combining text and instrumental singing in a sensitive way. The acoustic variety in the vocals is also extensively found in the vibraphone’s accompaniment through all kinds of contrasting soundscapes and different "prepared mallets". Over the years Lottchen established an almost magical interplay, unique and intense. This intense rapport also convinced the jury of the international jazz competition in France: Lottchen won the Crest Jazz Vocal Concours 2011. The Belgian/Swiss duo appeared at some renowned festivals including Jazz à Grignan, La nuits de tous les Jazz, Crest Jazz Vocal Festival, etc. After the release of their single-handed debut album "Lazy Afternoon" in 2009, Lottchen had the chance to play concerts in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and France. Their upcoming album will be the result of an enchanting encounter at the RecPublica Studios in Poland, recorded in spring of 2012.

What began in 2007 with a devastating defeat on a football pitch in Mexico (where 18 jazz students from Leipzig lost 7-0 to a handful of children from an orphanage in Léon), has now blossomed into a real success story. Sticking to the recipe of ‘just doing what you do well and with all your heart’, the 18 footballing philistines founded a big band when they got back to Germany.
With a drive for constant change, the Spielvereinigung Sued is always looking for additions from renowned guest soloists, composers and arrangers. The enthusiasm with which the musicians challenge different jazz styles and explore new manners of musical expression within a traditional big band, is reflected in their fresh and powerful playing.
Their latest ‘golden goal’ is undoubtedly ‘Zollers Expeditions Orkest’, a composition by the baritone saxophonist, bass clarinetist and composer Thomas Zoller, who after a 15-year break, has once again picked up the pen for a big band. "’Zollers Expeditions Orkest’ travels along the hidden path that liberates from notions defining how things are meant to be. Born in 1967, the Belgian pianist and composer Ivan Paduart sat at the piano for the first time at the age of 10. At the age of 17, he discovered jazz, and since then he has been climbing steadily upwards on the career ladder, garnering major awards and becoming recognized as a great on the international jazz scene. He has known his two companions on the album ‘Ibiza’, Philippe Aerts (bass) and Hans van Oosterhout (drums) for more than 25 years and has played with them alongside guest musicians such as Tom Harrell, Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Charlie Mariano and Bert Joris, to name just a few, on countless albums.
‘Ibiza’ though, is again a very special and independent work. The essence of this magnificent composition and its realization is best described by Ivan Paduart in his own words:
"The older I get, the more important it is for me to get to the point. I choose melodies, rather than using gimmickry and admittedly ‘sexy tricks’. I have always tried to reach the heart and, to a lesser degree, the mind with my music, and yet still stimulate both. I find that this can best be achieved with pure and seemingly simple melodies enriched with complex harmonies. Very deliberately, and without great fanfare, Cologne-based tenor saxophonist-composer Paul Heller has been turning out first-rate recordings over the past few years which he has designated as his Special Edition projects. Each project has in effect been Heller’s dream band, comprised of players he regards highly and always wanted to record with. On Vol. 1, it was his WDR Big Band of Cologne colleagues John Goldsby on bass, dutch drummer legend John Engels and WDR musical director and conductor Michael Abene on piano. On Vol. 2, Heller was joined by jazz drumming icon Al Foster, bassist Goldsby and pianist Olaf Polziehn. The results of those first two offerings were equally dynamic and characterized by the same impeccable sense of chemistry among the players.
For Vol. 3, Heller has recruited veteran American drummer Adam Nussbaum, an irrepressibly swinging presence on every bandstand he has occupied since his days with the John Scofield Trio and the Dave Liebman Quartet during the ‘70s and the Michael Brecker Quintet during the ‘80s.
Joining Heller and Nussbaum on Vol. 3 are the saxophonist’s brother Ingmar Heller, a formidable presence on upright bass and permanent member of the well known NDR Bigband of Hamburg, and also the marvelous Moscow-born Juilliard-trained pianist Simon Nabatov.

The English word ‘windfall’ describes ripe fruit being blown off trees. As a sweet apple that has fallen off your neighbours tree into your garden can be a pretty nice thing, ‘windfall’ also serves as a metaphor for an unexpected opportunity.
Ensemble Denada’s music is full of windfall. There is plenty of lucky accidents and coincidents, sounds and noises that go together in the most unexpected ways. Even the songs themselves often derive from obscure chances and stories. To say it in the band’s own words “A swimming moose, swimming a West Norwegian fjord can become a jazz song in 5/4, a typing error on a sheet of music can lead into a song about a sofa on a wild sleigh ride down a steep hill.”
Of course a musical project can never fully rely on the concept of luck, someone needs to pull the strings and grab the opportunities as they come along. For Ensemble Denada this someone is trombone player Helge Sunde. Being the musical mastermind behind the Norwegian jazz orchestra, Sunde is responsible for all compositions and arrangements.

It has been more than 20 years since Gisle Torviks life changed for ever. He was just a normal teenager in Torvikbygd in the region of Hardanger, Norway, when he rummaged in the attic of his parents house in that typical mixture of boredom and curiosity and found an old Höfner acoustic guitar. His father offered to teach him some chords, but 18 year old Gisle had his own plan: ‘I always wanted to play solos, just like Mark Knopfler’. We are lucky he was such a stubborn young man as today we can count him amongst the best jazz guitarists in Skandinavia. And by the way, he did also learn to play some chords in the last 20 years.

In the life of Marko Markovi?, there have always been dreams that he has always been reaching to catch, one after another. He was learning to play trumpet, so that his father would say "you are good in it, keep up", afterward to perform with his father’s orchestra, then to be the soloist in the same orchestra and taken seriously, to stand side by side with his idol, Boban, to get better than his father, to lead the orchestra around the world. All his dreams have come true. In his dreams there have always been the man and the trumpet. Now, he is becoming the man with the trumpet – a new role model for younger generations. With Boban besides him, Marko is taking brass band to a whole new dimension – while Boban used to combine Gypsy brass music with the violin of Lajko Felix, Marko started to compose differently, writing music in his own way, including new instruments into the orchestra. While some might say that guitar and drums are not something unusual, for brass bands in the Balkans it is something totally new. That was not mishmash like others, but consistent bras orchestra with addition of new music instruments. Slowly, but steadily, he is changing the tradition and going ahead of the new wave, like his ather was doing the similar thing for years before him.Preserving a traditional note in their modern music arrangements, the music of Boban and Marko is growing to something new and much bigger than what they did during previous years.

In an effort to break away from traditional Jazz forms, drummer Julian Külpmann and guitarist Charis Karantzas founded their new Berlin-based band, K-Square. The music written exclusively by the two young composers combines fresh grooves and creative improvisations with riff-based Singer-songwriter/Rock music. The special atmosphere of K-Square’s repertoire is enriched through the use of innovative, complex grooves, electronic sounds and mostly through the creative power and precision of the band members, joined on their debut recording by special guests Nils Wogram on trombone and David Friedman on marimba.
