Double Trio de Clarinettes
Itineraire Bis

Label: between the lines
release: November 2013
UPC/EAN: 608917123128

Line-up:
The Clarinet Trio:
Jürgen Kupke – Clarinet
Michael Thieke – Alto Clarinet, Clarinet
Gebhard Ullmann – Bass Clarinet

Le Trio de Clarinettes:
Armand Angster – Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Contrabass Clarinet
Sylvain Kassap – Eb Clarinet, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet
Jean-Marc Foltz – Clarinet, Bass Clarinet

Info:

Although saxophone quartets were repeatedly formed in jazz over the years, bands only playing clarinets are still very rare. There have been two trios in Europe for many years: the "The Clarinet Trio" in Germany and the "Trio de Clarinettes" in France. Putting the two together in a studio and then sending them off onto the stage to perform borders on insanity. But as is often the case with great works, only the idea of the actually impossible and the belief in its realization results in something really new – or in its failure at times too.

However, a work has been created with "Itinéraire Bis" that is in a class of its own, which represents a rarity even in jazz and not just thanks to the very extraordinary musicians. Instead, the reason is that two seasoned teams, which trust each other blindly, have transferred this trust into a sextet. With uncanny instinct and sureness, they follow one another into the great depths of free improvisation and exactly notated arrangements with perfect intonation. They do not limit themselves to prescribed concepts and sounds, but instead overblow, puff, pant and clatter, so that pure joy results. There are sounds, which you would rather locate in the animal kingdom or a factory. And then again very charming melodies – six clarinets in a small but huge cosmos. This is a CD for all, who have looked forward to a real sound for sore ears.

Jochen Baldes Subnoder
Here

Label: Double Moon Records
release: November 2013
UPC/EAN: 608917112528

Line-up:
Jochen Baldes (tenor saxophone)
Franz Hellmüller (guitar)
Thomas Bauser (piano)
Raffaele Bossard (bass)
Michi Stulz (drums)

Info:
Jochen Baldes already founded the band Subnoder 16 years ago, and consequently it is one of the most longstanding ones in Switzerland. Even if the members often changed, the heart has remained the same. The compositions and arrangements of the leader are that which create a great deal of the appeal of Subnoder – and for which he looks for the ideal band members each time, who understand and implement his concept. This is so even if the co-musicians always add their own touch, and Baldes even demands that from them. This experiment has again succeeded following the last, extensively praised album "The Moholo Songs" (Double Moon Records, 2007). The launching pad for it are the internalized structures and sounds of American jazz of the 50s to 70s, but the pieces are given wings by the original harmonics and rhythmics and the smooth lines of the melodies. The interlocking of topic and improvisation is striking, and the transitions are sometimes barely perceptible. As a result, the pieces on the CD seem to come from one mold, almost like a suite. A fantastic effect is created: pleasantly airy and easy to listen to, you only discover the complexity of the music when you listen very closely to it.

Info:

There are undoubtedly many piano trios in jazz. However, only very few of them have consistently done "their thing" as has the Marc Perrenoud Trio for many years to get inexorably to the top of their field. They have developed a language, which takes its inspiration from many sources like Esperanto and consequently can be learned and experienced by many. Opulently furnished harmony sequences remind you of Bach’s work, but then you are reminded of rock fanfares in the next moment. Only a few minutes later, and we are in the delta of blues that takes us on swinging waters. Then back to ballads full of sensitivity, which almost call études to mind. However, like the world and lives of the individuals in that, the music of the trio is rich in surprising moments, which either leave you with peace of mind or cause you to protest angrily. Whoever has seen the trio perform live knows how listeners are enchanted by this extraordinary music. Performances in cities such as Paris and New York, Berlin and Budapest as well as Buenos Aires and Panama are proof of this as are numerous tours through the Mideast and South America. "Vestry Lamento" is surprisingly only the third album of the trio existing since 2007. The predecessor CD "Two Lost Churches" (DMCHR 71095) released by Double Moon Records already triggered an extraordinary response in the press, and the new one will certainly surpass that.

Axel Schlosser
Tales From The South

Label: Double Moon Records
release: November 2013
UPC/EAN: 608917113020

Line-up:
Axel Schlosser – trumpet, flugelhorn
Olaf Polziehn – piano
Martin Sjöstedt – bass
Daniel Fredriksson – drums

Info:

The 37-year-old trumpet and flugelhorn player Axel Schlosser is releasing the first CD of his quartet founded in 2011. He has found perfectly matched partners in Olaf Polziehn on piano, Martin Sjöstedt on contrabass and Daniel Fredriksson on drums, who know precisely how to implement his musical visions and radiate with tasteful solos always at the service of the music. The range of pieces is very wide, and we undertake a musical journey, in which very different styles are interwoven. At times, they flash for a short time like words quoted randomly, and at other times they are played out to the end with time allotted for their development. Modern jazz meets ragtime and folk songs as well as modes of New Orleans’ sounds; the quartet plays full of drive and tension in upbeat numbers at times and then enchants listeners in ballads full of feeling and sensitivity. You notice with every note that the communication, the "chemistry", is right in the band. Schlosser produces wonderful sounds on the trumpet and flugelhorn, which range from aggressively sharp to deep and soft as silk. Polziehn on the piano shines not just thanks to his great solos, which are actually just as important, but also thanks to his ability to find the right notes in accompanying, to create space and – when necessary – to pound the keys to the fullest. The rhythm group of Martin Sjöstedt on bass and Daniel Fredriksson on drums is a dream team. Their playing supports the group to the utmost. Sjöstedt also entic

Levantino (lɛvɑn∙tino), n.: German male band.
World Folk between Sophie Hunger and Quadro Nuevo.
The young gentlemen of Levantino come from a variety of musical backgrounds: from classical music to traditional jewish folk or playing gypsy rhythms at street festivals, or even delivering Bavarian Rock.

Having met in high school, they first paid their dues playing as a live band for dinners and dances before going on their first club tour in 2012.

‟Listen to the band and you’ll be drawn in by their cool Klezmer sound, which spontaneously breaks out in an eruption of sound, before seamlessly slipping back into classical verse and then emerging into equally enthralling rock or impulsive free jazz. Nothing about them is conventional, nothing is predictable, and nothing is set in stone. Levantino’s concerts are like an adventurous trip for your ears“
(K. Schönmetzler)

When the concert begins, the cares of the world start to melt away.

"Simin Tander is a polyglot German-Afghan singer who combines the fierce creativity of Meredith Monk with the jazz savvy of Gretchen Parlato." All About Jazz (USA)

During the last few years German Afghan vocalist and songwriter Simin Tander has become one of the rising stars and most acknowledged young artists of the Dutch jazz scene.
Beside the Netherlands Simin Tander is developing an internationally recognized reputation with performances at the Jarasum Jazzfestival (Korea), JazzAhead! (Germany), Bohemia Jazz Fest (CZ), Madrid Jazz Festival (Spain), Hong Kong Jazz Festival and many more.
Simin has truly created an unique style: Blending jazz with singer songwriter elements and a hint of oriental mysticism. Floating from tender ballads to challenging rhythms, from passionate sound improvisations to narrative melodies all leading into a world of emotion and contrasts.
She moves her audience with a voice that knows every possible color and expression and embodies it with an alluring intensity.
On her second album "Where Water Travels Home" she will, for the first time, also perform songs in Pashtoe, the language of Afghanistan and the language of her father who passed away when she was a little child.

Lammel – Lauer – Bornstein
Novemberlied

Label: Nabel
release: February 2014
UPC/EAN: 4011471472223

Line-up:
Andreas Lammel piano
René Bornstein double bass
Florian Lauer drums

Info:

The musicians Andreas Lammel (piano, Berlin/Dresden), René Bornstein (bass, Dresden) and Florian Lauer (drums, Dresden) became acquainted during their studies at the Dresden University of Music in 2006. Since 2009 the formation Lammel – Lauer – Bornstein exists in its current distinctive lineup.
Being aware of traditional jazz handcraft as well as experimenting with modern, candid sounds, Lammel I Lauer I Bornstein create an innovative musical setting in which old patterns are not rejected but specifically disregarded. Thus, attention in large part is not to be focused on the individual musician, but rather seizes its ideas and motifs from the band as a whole. Next to musical openness and technical brilliance, longtime experiences of each instrumentalist in several successful projects add up to an exceedingly multi-faceted way of playing.
Hereby, compositions written by Andreas Lammel and René Bornstein create the fundament from which every concert progresses into unforeseen, innovative directions – without getting lost in arbitrariness. As a consequence, every interaction turns into a spontaneous as well as homogenous sound experience.

Klaus Gertken Trio
Melo

Label: Nabel
release: January 10, 2014
UPC/EAN: 4011471002529

Line-up:
Klaus Gertken piano
Carsten Schmelzer bass
Uli Moritz drums

Info:

"Someone blind", the first CD of three CDs of the Klaus Gertken Trio, recorded in 1992 with high-end audio engineering and a Bösendorfer grand piano in a Berlin backyard studio, was recently rediscovered in Japan where it reached astonishing sales figures.
Written in the style of the 90s, "Someone blind" only includes original compositions by Klaus Gertken, who in the meantime has also made a name for himself as author of a worldwide published keyboard school.
At that time, the CD was highly praised in the media and compared with productions of Keith Jarrett, Rainer Brüninghaus and early CDs from Pat-Metheny and Eberhard Weber.

Due to high demand – Nabel re-released the CD from 1995, originally released on the label Drops.
Melo is the second CD of this band.

Peuker8

Resound

Label: Nabel
release: January 2014
UPC/EAN: 4011471472124

Line-up:
Paul Peuker guitar
Clemens Pötzsch piano
Mark Weschenfelder saxophone, clarinet
Philine Jobst violin
Filip Sommer viola
Benjamin Arnold cello
Eugen Rolnik double bass
Florian Lauer drums

Info:
His engagement with Shostakovich, in particular the Russian’s first violin concerto (a major influence for I-Nocturne, the first track on this CD), inspired Paul Peuker to bring together elements of modern classical with contemporary improvised music for his large formation Peuker8.
The music of Peuker8 gestures more towards romanticism. While by no means the first crossover experiment of its kind, here the music contains something new, with the boundaries being pushed out further. „Jazz“ solos are few and far between; stylistically identifiable grooves figure less, with rhythmic and driving passages, (almost) free group improvisations and sound collages featuring strongly, and also reading from a score in best classical tradition. Melody and counterpoint here, excursions to the borderlines of musical anarchy there, and in between everything beyond the realms of convention. The whole packed in a sound, which, thanks to the instrumentation, always sets a dark and secretive mood.
Following their first ever live performance, it became apparent that Peuker8’s unique musical recipes were resonating extraordinarily with their audience, something which has continued and developed with each new performance.

Info:
The Cologne based band Ana Mai with its debut album BLOSSOM creates an atmospheric indie jazz between melancholy and a new start, which tells onomatopoeically from the peculiarities of daily life. In her songs Anna Maria Schuller portrays places, relations and emotions, which have a certain impression on her but don’t last forever. The album title BLOSSOM, inspired by the Hermann Hesse poem “Stufen”, reflects this fact very well. Besides diverse musical influences the use of the voice plays an important role, too. The songs deal e.g. with new beginnings, desire, letting go and the topic time – a 3-part cycle on the basis of Michael Ende’s fairy tale “Momo”.

It rumbles in the crate. She was the naughty Mrs Bubbles and played an oblique Princess. She propagated  Alpine Voodoo on her "Suicidal Yodels "album, and recently with her " Stucky Live ," gave an overview of 25 years, live on stage.
Now Erika Stucky takes on a new role: it is the Black Widow – and she choses as her accomplices experts of some other sort of vocal entertainment from the environment of Tom Waits.
Two years ago she was involved in the Rain Dogs show, a tribute to the legendary album of Tom Waits, among other concert halls at the celebrated festival in Montreux:  Here Erika Stucky met the musicians: David Coulter , a specialist on the musical saw and more usual instruments , and Terry Edwards trained on bass , keyboards and saxophones as well as trumpets also knitted the sounds on Waits  wildest music theater " Black Rider ". The two set contact with Michael Blair who had delivered the Waits percussions in the eighties. The result: balladesque changes with anarchic noise, tearjerkers with maliciousness. "I have always found joy in the rumble -jumble sounds. Only now, I have the world-class best rumbling men on board with me." says Stucky with a smile.
