Kiesewetters Gammarama
For The Cats

Label: Double Moon Records
release: April 2014
UPC/EAN: 608917113129

Line-up:
Jan Kiesewetter (Tenor and Soprano Sax)
Bernd Huber (Electric Guitar)
Uli Fiedler (Double Bass)

Info:
Jan Kiesewetter is a young man with ambitious goals, which he also achieves. The saxophonist is not only a gifted instrumentalist, but also a composer who is attracting attention. He had a stack of pieces that he composed and for which he was looking for a band that fit to them. He finally found the band members in 2011 and then immediately won the "Augsburg Art Promotion Prize" with them. The jury stated that he was awarded the prize because his band was distinguished by "a high degree of instru-ment mastery, musical presence, maturity and a commanding nature." The band name GammaRama has a hidden meaning: the music should penetrate everything in its path like gamma rays. However, the compositions are also penetrated by blues and jazz history, where Thelonious Monk repeatedly turns up, by multifaceted rhythms all the way to Cha Cha Cha, and by dreamy ballads to swinging uptempo numbers.

Andreas Kurz Quartet
Caught Into Something Turning

Label: Double Moon Records
release: April 2014
UPC/EAN: 608917113228

Line-up:
Johannes Enders (tenor and soprano sax)
Jan Eschke (piano)
Andreas Kurz (double bass)
Bastian Jütte (Drums)

Info:
Marty Cook, the great trombonist, didn’t miss the opportunity to write the liner notes for Andreas Kurz’s first CD under his own name. He comes to the conclusion that Andreas did "what great musicians have always done: he absorbed, transformed and expanded the wealth of traditions into something personal, something new." This is reflected not only in his sensitive but demanding playing on his instrument, but also in his compositions, as you can now hear. They are distinguished by the successful mirroring of human feelings in melodies, which are often very catchy but never banal. Instead, they are well thought-out with a refined structure and an almost philosophical depth. A type of narrative unfolds in the ballads, through which the complete band moves. However, the maturity of the former newcomer and shooting star of the Munich jazz scene cannot be overheard in the fast pieces either. Even complex rhythmic displacements or unusual metrics sound completely effortless. The three co-musicians of Andreas Kurz are also responsible for this. All four have known each other for years and have performed on stage innumerable times, which results in blind understanding. Not to be forgotten: each musician is a member of the elite in German jazz in his own right.

Info:

The freedom and responsibility of a young generation is the experiment to doubt "old truths" at the same time as you are picking them up. That has explosive power in favorable cases. In much rarer cases, a young musician finds a new, relevant aesthetic position.

Rebecca Trescher is a young jazz composer of surprising maturity. She has a commanding mastery of her handwork and uses it to create artworks, which often surprise but never offend – a wonderful and rare alliance between artistic integrity and melodiousness.

Her modesty is spectacular. In the music business of brief attention spans, she dares to do without brash "convincing music" and trusts in the magnetic attraction of a good story, stable groundwork and a significant idea. "Lofoten" outlines its completely own dramaturgy of mysterious form blocks, takes its time to speak a rare language clearly and keeps its inescapable suspense for a whole nine minutes.

Many compositions by Rebecca Trencher reflect the current world of fragmented truths, our networked and kaleidoscopic reality. Apparently straightforward grooves and melodies as in the "The Red Line" suddenly dispute their roles and turn the musical sphere upside down. In "Samarra", awkward and clear rhythms stumble through a hostile metric framework. The large, epic arcs of "Camille" take place in the background while fine, small melodies try to placate in the vicinity of the listener’s ear.

Anne Czichowsky Quintet
The Truth And The Abstract Blues

Label: Double Moon Records
release: April 2014
UPC/EAN: 608917113426

Line-up:
Anne Czichowsky – vocals
Thilo Wagner – piano
Martin Wiedmann – guitar
Axel Kühn – bass
Matthias Daneck – drums

Info:

Jazz singing (and not only singing) has changed considerably over the past decades. This proves the ability of jazz to integrate new trends, styles and techniques and combine them into something new as only few other genres can. At times, the reference to the roots is also lost or even ignored. However, artists appear on the scene time and again, who do the one without leaving out the other. The Anne Czichowsky Quintet is one of the contemporary masters of this discipline in Germany (and beyond). It celebrates the relaxed but driving sound, which is so particular to swing jazz. But then it already switches to an uptempo bebop only to meet again in a ballad, which deeply moves the listener: with a radiating voice, but also at times with a guitar solo that could fit perfectly in a rock song. Anne Czichowsky composes lyrics for instrumental pieces and solos again and again, as she already did on her previous album (released by Neuklang), among others, "Idle Moments" (Duke Pearson) and "Blues and the Abstract Blues" (Oliver Nelson). She scat sings with her variable and very accurate voice, which you almost would want to call an "instrumental". A simply beautiful and entertaining CD has resulted, a joy for aficionados of acoustic, modern jazz.

Tobias Meinhart Quartet
In Between

Label: Double Moon Records
release: June 2014
UPC/EAN: 608917113624

Line-up:
Tobias Meinhart (tenor and soprano saxophone)
Lorenz Kellhuber (piano and rhodes)
Rocky Knauer (bass)
Gabriel Hahn (drums)

Info:

he leader, tenor and soprano saxophonist Tobias Meinhart characterizes the very individual sound of the quartet as "between modern New Yorker ideal sound and swinging hardbop jazz of the 60s." The four young and talented musicians do not at all want to start on an adventure called "jazz is German" condemned to failure. Instead, they are fully conscious that their roots are in the styles characterized by US American jazz. They pay tribute right away to one of the big names: Joe Henderson. However, his composition "Inner Urge", subtly newly arranged by TMQ, is the only composition by someone else on "Pursuit of Happiness". This quartet is not only strong as an interpreter unit, but also may be described as outstanding and distinguished (in the true sense of the word as many awards testify to) in the area of composition.
The Tobias Meinhart Quartet was founded in 2008 and was immediately a success. They already played together on a stage with Joshua Redman and the Yellowjackets feat. Mike Stern in the year of their founding. In the following year, they won out against 80 other bands at the Straubing "Startbahn Jazz" (trans.: Jazz Take-Off Runway) and took 1st place. They also received the Audience Award as best band at the International Jazz Competition Getxo/Bilbao

Line-up:
Philipp Stauber/ Paulo Morello – Gitarre
Sven Faller – Kontrabass
Tim Collins – Schlagzeug, Vibrafon

Info:

“The vocal Lady has found her sound" the Munich’s Merkur writes about Stefanie Boltz. And this sound packs a punch. Anyone who has experienced her electrifying live performance could get the impression that she was born on stage.

She caused a first sensation as the singing half of the duo "Le Bang Bang" with Sven Faller, which was crowned as part of the "Major League" of the Munich music scene by Elle Magazine, and with which she has now visited all the major venues of the German jazz scene.
The MZ aptly remarked that Stefanie Boltz "…almost playfully trumps with her scatting, soulful roaring, whispering, girlish flirting and intensely swinging vocals.

"Her intense and amazingly nuanced expressive style runs like a red thread through her music, which intuitively moves between swinging jazz, blues, gospel and acoustic songwriting. For her solo debut, Stefanie Boltz presents herself with a high-profile trio of key players of the German jazz scene: Paulo Morello on guitar, Sven Faller on Bass and Tim Collins on drums.

Lena Mentschel
In my little Garden

Label: GLM Music, Edition Collage
release: 30.05.2014
UPC/EAN: 4014063156020

Line-up:
Lena Mentschel – Gesang
Chris Neuschmid – Gitarre
Michael Lagger – Klavier
Philipp Kopmajer – Drums
Valentin Czihak – Kontrabass

Prelistening on Youtube

Info:

„In My little Garden is Lena Mentschels third and definitely most personal album-release. Eleven auto-biographic compositions give the listener a glimpse into the dreamy little soul-garden of a young woman, caught up in between rock’n’roll, fancy lemon butter cream cakes, total anarchy and freehold property.

Behind the thick walls of the maze which was carefully built around this garden, you can find some humorous short-stories – which of course speak about love in all its daft variations. But also, they speak about issues of a generation, that appears to be a bit lost in the chaotic „anything you want can be yours at anytime“ – century – where self-fullfillment plays such an important role, that people are on the edge of almost forgetting their own names. Love becomes a mystery, a fairytale from long gone ancient times. We fall in love, fall into despair, build mazes around our hearts and in the end we don‘t even manage to find our way back in.

And the first wrinkles show up around the anxoiusly happiness-seeking eyes – yet wisdom hasn‘t arrived yet. But then, quite unexpectedly, you become aware of the fact that everything is just a try. And well worth it, since nobody knows, what all of this is really about anyway. So here we go again, posting buddhist quotes and just move on…

On the record, various musical styles meet and seem to get along quite well – not even slightly worried about the Jazz / Pop – issue. A fantastic band (Michael Lagger (piano), Philipp Kopmajer (drums), Valentin Czihak (bass), Chris Neuschmid (guitars)) and a heart-warming singer create a unique sound, that every now and then tastes a bit like red wine and dark chocolate – one minute, you can feel a blue late summer melancholy – but then one minute later you’re already cruising down the west-coast in a convertible, drinking champagne.

Donauwellenreiter
Messei

Label: Intuition
release: April 2014
UPC/EAN: 608917131123

Line-up:
Maria Craffonara (voc, v, perc)
Thomas Castañeda (p, kb)
Nikola Zarić (acc)
Jörg Mikula (d)
and guests

Prelistening on Youtube

Info:
What the Donauwellenreiter serve up on their new, second album is simply incredible, incredible because there is no pigeonhole for these songs and any classification would have to fail. But also: simply incredibly beautiful. A theme, a melodic inspiration and an appropriate ambiance made real with that which the trio can provide in abundance anyway: the emotional, powerful voice of the singer Maria Craffonara, who also enthuses with flawless violin sounds when required; the virtuoso on the keys Thomas Castañeda, who often conceals his technical brilliance behind wondrous, touching melodies; and an accordionist Nikola Zarić, who creates sounds that you can hardly believe come from this instrument, all the way to the sound of a complete string ensemble. One of the best drummers in Europe joined the band for this CD: Jörg Mikula. It could hardly be better, because the new compositions of the pianist Castañeda for Messëi are much groovier than the previous songs. In addition, because the delight in this new addition was so great, other gems were engaged for one piece or another: from the very young singer Magdalena Grabher to the bassist Raphael Preuschl and all the way to trumpet player Alexander Wladigeroff and trombonist Mario Vavti. Fantastic compositions, inspired musicians: if a gift producer then draws the threads together, the work is complete.

Andy Lumpp · Heinrich Chastca · Stefan Hoelker
Mutation

Label: Nabel
release: 10.04. 2014
UPC/EAN: 4011471472421

Line-up:
Andy Lumpp: piano
Heinrich Chastca: bass
Stefan Hoelker: percussion

Info:

"My art is the expression of my existence in the world"
Relating this artistic statement by the English writer Zadie Smith to the world of music, one might feel that the free improvisation we hear from the Andy Lumpp Trio is truly a most vital and authentic mode of musical expression. This music happens spontaneously, arising not from any preliminary discussion or agreed approach between the musicians (all of whom have evolved their very own personal creative artistic repertoires), but from an authentically shared musical dialogue between them, never in any way diminishing into the chaotic, but rather revealing a clear harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and tonal structure.

Info

As soon as a vice gets spread widely enough, it becomes a virtue.” Frank Sinatra, the mysterious charmer with his Mafia-hat and smoky voice, set out to prove this hopeful hypothesis. Having grown up among the Italian and Jewish families in the pub and gangster milieu of small-town Hoboken, he appeared out of the blue to launch a meteoric and glamorous stage career. He orchestrated his path like a balancing act between euphoria and psychosis – sometimes on top of the world, sometimes down in the dumps. What a model for a musical dialogue!

Info:
The first time I went to Italy, I fell in love.

Upon returning home, I continued to crave the new place that I discovered. I kept going back, and each time was better than the first. But it wasn’t till I was invited by Massimo Morganti in 2008 to Senigallia did I understand the true meaning of Italy.
That week changed my life.
I discovered an ensemble that performed my music beautifully, musicians that were receptive to my teaching concepts, friendships that last a lifetime, a new place of beauty and a deeper exploration of the soul of Italy in its cuisine; I was home.
Within this recording you will find elements of my experience in Senigallia and the Marche region: the joyous "festa" in Subo, the lush performance by the band and ardent trombone solo in La Danza Infinita, the hard groove in Hang Around and the excellent execution of the horns in You’re Leaving and Rabbit Hole.
I cannot thank Massimo Morganti enough for making this possible, the Colours Jazz Orchestra for working so hard on this music, the guys at Naive Studio for giving us such a spectacular experience and Johannes Wohlleben for lending us that extra ear and meticulously recording this album. When I think of how my Italian experience had culminated into that week of recording in Fano, indeed, I am overwhelmed with joy, warmth and gratitude. Massimo Morganti and the Colours Jazz Orchestra have become my new family, my home away from home.
I cannot wait to go back for more.

This album is a rare moment to cherish and enjoy every second of. Awarded Norwegian pianist Helge Lien and his band developed their very own, distinctively nordic, jazz trio sound, brought to perfection on their latest, highly acclaimed release “Natsukashii”. The ten new compositions are exploring new ways for the reflexive and experimental, as well as the playful, groove orientated side of the trio’s music. After 13 years, Per Oddar Johansen takes over from Knut Aalefjær on drums, bringing new ideas and power to the band. It’s the world class songwriting and musicianship, as well as the stand-out production that make “Badgers and other Beings” an unmissable experience for both jazz fans and audiophiles.

Info:

Improving a classic: Pete Alderton’s Living on Love remastered

There’s no end to playing the blues, no definitive version of a song or album. Still, the re-release of Pete Alderton’s breakthrough Living on Love may initially come as a surprise. Although the album got off to a slow start and mainly spread by word of mouth, after all, it would eventually come to be considered a masterpiece, sell out its entire print run and establish Alderton as a leading voice on the European blues scene. And yet, even a classic can be improved: Without loosing the naked emotional power and raw intensity of the original, the re-issue includes a completely new arrangement of stand-out track "Song for David" and has been carefully re-mastered by Hans-Jörg Maucksch (16 Horsepower, Sara K), adding additional sonic warmth, richness and nuances. There may no such thing as a definitive song or album in the blues – but this version of Living on Love definitely comes pretty close.

Timeless-sensitive blend of Jazz, Classical, Pop and World Music, gently inviting the listener on an atmospheric journey.

Gjertrud Lunde’s debut album "Hjemklang" is an impressive collection of songs, gently inviting the listener on an atmospheric journey, sharing experiences and impressions of the distance travelled.
Her soulful compositions are skilfully wrapped with impressionist sound paintings, just as with groovy beats. Therewith, Gjertrud Lunde creates a musical cosmos, that exceeds artistic, stylistic and national boundaries in an effortless manner. Her timeless music is a sensitive blend of Jazz, Classical, Pop and World Music.

An excellent four-piece band adds a wide range of expression to Gjertrud Lunde’s voice. The Cologne based artist sings her compositions in English, Norwegian, French and Portuguese. Diverse and homogeneous at the same time, "Hjemklang" unfolds its own magic, keeping the quality level up to the very last note. With luminosity, lightness -always accompanied by a live near depth- the album sounds as close and familiar as a good old friend.

30 years ago it was a Lebanese, who was the first to set standards for the fusion of Arabic tradition and western jazz. One generation after the success of the oud-master Rabih Abou-Khalil, the conditions for teamwork between orient and occident have changed. The bridging of cultures is no longer exotic. Now it has a completely natural exchange. The creative flow unearths an immense palette of musical perspectives, creates completely new homelands in and for music. The bold vanguard in the new qualities of this encounter is the quartet Masaa – and with the poet, composer and singer Rabih Lahoud the focus is once again on a man with his roots in Lebanon. … [read more]
